I played softball with Sue in the Seattle Parks and Rec League for many years. It was always fun when a new played joined another team and eventually realized that she was playing against her teacher from Stanislo! But my favorite Sue memory was one night we were playing a late game under the lights and I guess the game went longer than expected. We were in the field and Sue was playing right center field. A fly ball came her way and she was tracking it, then the lights went out. And for a second no one knew what happened til Sue came onto the infield with the ball having caught it in the dark.
I hope that everyone finds some comfort in the many stories and tributes that have been made about the impact that Sue had on her community.

I attended Sanislo from 1979-86. I wasnโt in SCATs, but she made a huge impression all the same. Always kind and welcoming, she made PE fun and inclusive for everyone. I canโt hear Kool & The Gangโs โCelebrateโ without thinking of her. And I remember her and several other teachers lip syncing to a 50s song at an assembly, maybe โLeader of the Pack?โ Climbing ropes, double dutch, archery, the big parachute, and the massive poster of Jack Sikma in the corner of the gym. I donโt remember a ton about my early elementary years, but memories of Miz T and her gym are vivid.
I attended Sanislo in the 2000โs with all 3 of my siblings and SCATs was a family affair. Miz T and Bud were role models for all of us. More than sparking a love for movement and sport, she taught all of us the true value of hard work. She taught us that team work and dedication will pay off and that the fun you can have along the way is endless. Many of my fondest moments include red shorts with a white and red โSCATsโ shirt - in the gym at Sanislo and other schools throughout the city, on fields and at sporting events. When I think back to my first passions, I remember feeling such an excitement in getting to miss recess or stay after school to practice. When people ask me a fun fact about myself or a cool talent I have, many of those moments with Miz T and SCATs get to be shared and lovingly remembered. I canโt thank Miz T and her family enough for having such an impact on all of us. She will be dearly missed.
I attended Sanislo in the early 2000s and was part of SCATS (for unicycling and juggling). Ms. T knew how to push kids to bring out the best in them. She never let me give up and I learned to be so much more confident under her direction. I think back to those days and can't believe she had full command of a gym full of 8 year olds doing pretty skilled circus arts. We all wanted to make her proud and show off new skills and we were still having tons of fun while doing it. One of the most impactful teachers I've ever had and I'm sad I never got to tell her as an adult how much her tough love meant to me.
My son J and daughter Tera were part of the SCATS team. Bud and Sue were the most excellent PE teachers I've ever known. The commitment to community and their love for fitness spoke volumes. I still have a pair of SCATS sweat pants I wear today. They are over 30yrs old....wow! They will be missed.
I was so sad to hear about Miz T. She was so important to both my girls. Sanislo was what is was because of her. It is the reason we chose Sanislo. When she retired the light and energy dimmed there. No longer were kids doing handstands down the hallways or back hand springs or juggling in the gym. And the double Dutch days were long gone. The unicycling program limped a long for a few years but Miz Tโs joy was gone. She was epic. She was an icon. And we will all miss her.
My girls, aged 22 and 26 can still unicycle. And they wow their friends. Miz T believed in them. And they blossomed. Thank you Miz T.

I had the best time at Sanislo from about '85 to '92ish I guess. With all the amazing "open concept" activities going on at Sanislo, SCATs was the engine that made it all go. Not only did we learn unique skills and lifelong joys relating to physical education, we also learned what it meant to be a part of something much larger than ourselves. From the Hip 2 Be Fit tshirts to the loud music and inspirational athlete posters in her gymnasium, Ms T was the absolute best! Everybody loved her and she loved all of us. I remember one time we were learning about soccer and she passed me a ball and asked me to dribble it over to her. So I dribbled it - like a basketball- and she laughed with her sly grin, but didn't make me feel bad about it. We were learning! That's what learning is, and she knew how to teach. We'll all miss her but rest assured, those of us who had her as a teacher will always carry her memory close to our hearts. Thank you for sharing her with us!
I played softball for many years with Sue and Bud. They were always encouraging, fun, and fierce, but friendly competitors. They wanted to win, but never at the expensive of fun and camaraderie. I enjoyed observing their interactions, their support for one another, and the obvious love that they had for one another. Their devotion to each other was clear. I was sad when they “retired” from our City of Seattle Parks & Rec team (Ornamental Glass), as they and Ross Prince, who passed away too young and so quickly, had been the heart of our team. I am so sorry for your loss of both Sue and Bud to such a terrible disease and so close in time. My deepest sympathies. Sincerely, Nicolle Rutherford

So sorry about Sue. I knew both her and Bud through all things PE related. And through playing on their team for Senior SlowPitch Softball. Both absolutely were wonderful people. โค๏ธ

I feel emotional ๐ข posting this tribute to our beloved Miz T. Yet it is an honor for my family & I to do so, to celebrate & remember 1 of the most amazing, selfless, unforgettable & larger than life human beings to ever grace this earth. My 2 daughters Celeste and Andrea Adachi went to Sanislo & Celeste was on SCATS as a unicycler & Andrea was Miz T’s protรฉgรฉ for back handsprings. They were even featured in the Seattle Times. Even though Andrea never did master a back handspring, we are forever grateful for your mom’s dedication, patience and belief in her. The last time I saw your mom and dad, I ran into them at Lincoln Park. It was great catching up with your mom and she shared that your dad (also a wonderful human being), had Alzheimer’s. As we chatted, Bud smiled happily & seemed so at peace & I remember thinking what a great couple โค๏ธ they were. I am the power of attorney and caretaker for my older sister who has Alzheimer’s and understand well what you have gone through. I am so sorry your family has gone through such loss and tragedy. Your parents were so loved and you bet there will be hundreds of us showing up at your mom’s memorial to honor and remember her!โค๏ธ
